Kindergarten Rules
Look, if you had, one shot
Or one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you capture it, or just let it slip?
Yo
I was bold but shy. Inquisitive but reserved. I was going to own that joint even though some days I was too scared to even step into the room.
I was a badass. 5 going on 6.
Kindergarten, bitches.
The thought of going intoxicated me. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to jump up and down in excitement or crawl in a corner and hide. It was my first shot at independence. My first break at being an individual.
What if they found out I couldn’t tie my laces? The only way I could even remotely pretend to was with those damn rabbit ears and everybody knew that was just a pre-schooler’s way of faking it.
Despite the fear, I don’t know what catapulted my little scrawny legs into that room, where my wise and loving teacher, Mrs. Zimms, used her patient ways, her words of kindness and her strength of character to build us up.
I look back at that shot. And I know I wouldn’t have learned to aim so well if I hadn’t been given it.
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime
I loved my shot. I loved that I was given such a great introduction into education by a woman who made me believe I could do anything. I wish every child had the same chance and the same opportunity that I had.
I also wish every adult had the chance to look back at a goofy picture of themselves like the ones below and smile at some silly memory of his or her childhood. A memory of a time when learning was fun, bullies didn’t yet exist and it was okay to be innocent.
Taking this trip down memory lane, however, brings me to something more fun. A contest where you can earn more money than I ever conceived of fitting into my piggy bank in Kindergarten.
But the beat goes on: da-da-dum da-dum da-dah.
To participate – just match the picture (with the assigned alphabet) to the blogger whose blog is listed below. What’s in it for you? Other than some fun (and it’s fun, promise), you can win an awesome $300 Amazon gift card. You can also get to know some of the bloggers listed here, if you don’t already.

I'm Kiran, I'm a dreamer. A writer. A singer. A mother. An ugly crier. An Indian-American. Who loves Gandhi. My stories are full of truth that is sometimes hard for me to say out loud. This blog is where I overcome my fears and live (and love) out loud.

Your teacher sounds amazing! Mine was too and it is funny because we were terrified, her name was Mrs. Hate! Can you even believe it? What can we do to help our children and our schools succeed? There are far too many kids who don’t get the experiences that we had and it really makes me sad.

No way, Brittany! Mrs. Hate? That’s terrible. I have a friend whose last name is Dick. Yeah. That one sucks too.
No pun intended.
Yes and agree about kids not getting a chance – way too often.
Kiran
I love it when a teacher makes such a huge impact on a young life. I hope Mrs Zimms knows that.
I love your goofy picture!
And love doing this with you and all the other ladies.

I was scared of my first grade teacher. But kindergarten? She was an angel. Thanks for all your work to get this off the ground! Love it!
Kiran
teachers are powerful people, no? truly they can help or harm a child in tremendous ways. I was like you Kiran–bold underneath but shy on top. eventually some of that boldness would make itself known. xox

teachers can make you or break you when you are that young. they can make you love learning or hate the idea of school. I am glad I had such a great kindergarten teacher. She balanced out the bitch I had who sucked all the life and confidence out of me once I hit 3rd grade
.
Glad you found your boldness and so happy to be doing this with you!
Sadly it wasn’t until grade 2 that I had a kind teacher and then grade 3 almost ended it for. I mean seriously people, who becomes an elementary school teacher when you clearly dislike children. I have written on my blog about my grade 3 teacher before. Ugh. Cruel woman.
What a fun contest. Good luck to all who enter.

Lori,
My third grade teacher hated me. I was so scared to go to school because she was so sarcastic, cutting and cruel. I always felt like she targeted me, but then later learned my whole class felt the same way. I don’t get it – teaching is a hard profession – why go into it if you don’t enjoy kids? She later ended up marrying my 5th grade teacher, who I really liked until I realized he was a super shitty judge of character. Oh well.
Sorry you went through the same thing – honestly was the longest school year of my life so I feel for you!
Kiran
I love that you were a kindergarten bad ass.

Now when i look back, I will always picture myself with an oversized hoodie, a la eminem, smacking my palm with a fist.
Yeah – so badass. Strawberry Shortcake lunch box and all!
This. Exactly. I love that you are still that fearless girl.

I like hearing your kindergarten theme song. Didn’t everyone have one?
If they didn’t have a theme song, they definitely should. Ja Rule and Jay Z still have a boatload of tunes I haven’t considered yet
Mrs. Zimms sounds pretty amazing. And I love this post and how you’ve written it. Kindergarten is our one shot and first break. Love that you ladies are doing this. So so fun.

Thank you, Christine! She WAS amazing. She was kind of on the older side, so I never made the effort to track her down, always fearing I would hear the worst. I kind of wish I had now …
Know what I love? That you mix kindergarten memories with Eminem. That’s what makes you, YOU! So fun. You’re adorable.

I have a lot of respect for teachers because I think they have such a big role to play in our and our childrens lives. We are today partly because of the way made us feel and shape us into become a person. I am so bad at guessing but I am really tempted to give my shot
So glad you are back now and hope you are feeling better!

That’s such a cool way of looking at it – as an intro to education.
As for rabbit ears, my son doesn’t even know that. How do kids learn to tie their shoes these days with all that Velcro?
Love having you and your wise words as part of this.

My daughter’s kindergarten teacher wore a white cape, skinny jeans and a Gucci belt on the first day (and she was pretty much dressed like that thereafter). When one of the kids complained about not wanting to be in school, she pretty much said – look kid what do you think I’d rather be doing? Don’t you think I would rather be on a beach somewhere?
I don’t know, – she was French, it kind of worked, she made me laugh.
A far cry from your teacher, I think.

She sounds almost like our Hungarian Au Pair who came to the United States to work on a better tan and to become a professional Salsa dancer. Yeah. That didn’t work so well.
Somehow though, when the French say it, it does sound more badass. And it’s true – I say the same thing to my boss all the time

I love that song so much. It sounds like you had an awesome kindergarten experience, and it obviously helped shape you into the amazing woman you are today.

I think early education teachers especially are special souls. We hand our very little ones off to them each day so they can teach and inspire them. Sounds like you had an awesome teacher!
Kindergarten teachers are sooo important. I hope my daughter gets a wonderful one next year! (Also, bunny ears? Hilarious.)

The photos are adorable! I don’t remember my kindergarten teacher, but my first grade teacher was Miss. Fish – I loved her name.

I was lucky to have so many good teachers as I went through school. They really help set us on the right path and inspired us, didn’t they! And you’re right – I am glad we had the opportunity to look at these pictures and remember. It was a great exercise!
